The Pope Joke
One of the funniest things I've read in a a while is a controversial article titled, The 52 Funniest Things About the Upcoming Death of the Pope. I'll give you two samples:
52. Pope pisses himself just before the end; gets all over nurse.
45.Pope departs Earth at a time when Hitch is top-grossing movie in the world. . .
The editor of the paper that published this was forced to resign due to outrage from the public as well as New York's senators. The columnist who wrote the thing in the first place had insightful things to say about that.

I do not understand why so many people believe that they have expertise regarding the papacy, Roman catholicism, or Canon law. For example, why would you make the claim that the Pope is the holiest man on earth? John Paul II is considered particularly saintly, but it's not because of his rank. The rank itself is not divine or particularly holy.
I will stop before I start rambling. Taibi's piece, his later summary, and especially the Metafilter chatter, are all ignorant, inane and needlessly vicious. I'm embarrassed for these people.
